Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah is an American performer and actress. In film, music and television, Queen Latifah has received 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nods and nominations for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah is the daughter of an Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and an Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior was born and raised within Newark New Jersey. Latifah's parents divorced when Latifah, then ten years was ten years old. Latifah attended Catholic School in Newark, NJ and was educated by her family's Baptist Church. Latifah refers to an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and gentle". Her cousin granted it to her in the age of eight. Always tall, her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a forward for her high school basketball team. She sang the song"Home" from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah began her career as a beatboxer with The Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah became a member of the Flavor Unit's original group that included several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song and signed Latifah in 1988 for the release of her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
